Best steel toe boots I've ever worn!
I thought I'd leave a review to encourage Bates and UsCav to continue to offer these in extended sizes, so here it goes...
I've been wearing Bates DuraShocks on the flight line since 2001 and now that these come in size 14 ABU I will NEVER go back to Bellevilles. I've paid out of pocket for 3 pairs of the black ones but luckily the Memorial Day sale price in 2008 was just below the price limit for Supply to foot the bill during the changeover to ABUs. Ten minutes into a commander's call while wearing Bellevilles and it felt like someone took a hammer to my spine. On the contrary, Bates DuraShocks are still comfy after pounding pavement for 12 hours.
I seem to recall the black pair were better ventilated from the ankle up but the ABU ones still keep your feet relatively cool, even though you don't get any airflow to your actual foot. But MOPP overboots and sandbox deployments will soak any sock so it's no big deal at the end of the day.
I don't remember if the black ones had the same tread pattern as these but I do recall how slippery the black ones were if you got hydraulic fluid, dirt, or sand between your foot and the hangar floor or if you're pushing a -60 across in the winter and step on an intake area paint line. Then again, those boots weren't really designed for negative 20 degree weather but they're so comfortable that I just wore heavy socks and dealt with the cold.
In regards to durability, I have never had an issue. I put so many miles on my first pair that I wore a steel toe straight through the sole. I also wore down the insides of each heel so that my feet kind of leaned inward when I stood still. And you know what, even at that point they were still comfortable. I have never experienced a factory defect or premature dilapidation. These boots are durable as all get-out. I even gave a pair of my like-new black ones to a buddy in carpentry and he loves them.
Like all ABU boots, these will soak up hydraulic fluid, grease, JP8, Iraqi sand, etc. so it's not really worth mentioning...
Thank you Bates for releasing these in ABU color and extended sizes (14/15)! These are the ONLY boots I'll wear on the flight line if I have my say.
The Most Liteweight and Cumfortable Safety Toed Boot you'll ever whear!
I've been in the military for almost 24 years and had many different makes of boots issued to me and 13 years ago I was issued the Bates DuraShocks what a difference, when you are on your feet all day standing on concrete ( no more sore Back...) Great Boot I am glade that they make them in the Sage Green so we can wear them with our new ABDU's.
Im not in the AirForce but I wore the black leather version in the Navy and these boots are super comfortable and both pairs I had were near industructible. I hope this helps out my brothers and sisters in the USAF.
